The medical assistance program referenced therein is called “KIDS CONNECTION” and includes both the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and the Nebraska Medical Assistance Program, (NMAP) also known as Medicaid.
Kids Connection is health care coverage developed by the State of Nebraska for children whose families meet certain income guidelines. The program currently provides routine, preventive health care, basic hospitalization, specialty care as needed and certain mental health services for over 133,000 of Nebraska’s children. Recent Federal and State legislation allows income guidelines to be relaxed so that effective September 1, 2009, additional children will be eligible.
Those who have health care coverage have a better chance of being healthy. It also allows parents to give their children the medical care necessary to stay healthy and focus on their studies. Children with health care coverage are less likely to miss school because of illness. Children who go to school every day, ready to learn, will perform better in school today and in the future (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services; “Insure Kids Now!”, 2007).
