High School Band Receives Honors

Ryan Marsh

February 07, 2018

The high school band has been selected by the Nebraska Music Education Association to perform at the State Capitol as part of their “Music Education at the Capitol” week.  The concert on March 7 will start at 12:00 pm in the rotunda and is open to the public.  The band was selected through a statewide audition process that was open to vocal and instrumental groups at all age levels.  Eight total ensembles were chosen to perform during the celebration.  Other Malcolm groups chosen for this honor include the high school choir in 2011 and 2016 and a saxophone quartet in 2005.

The band will also receive the Academic Achievement Award from the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association at their annual convention on March 2.  To qualify for this award, the band’s average cumulative GPA must be 3.5 or higher.  After coming up short the past few years, they succeeded this year with an average 3.5 including nine students with a 4.0.  This marks the second time the band has earned this award in the program’s history.
