PK-5 Remote Learning

March 18, 2020

Malcolm PreK-5 Parents,

Malcolm Public Schools has decided to close school tomorrow, Wednesday, March 18th with the closure lasting indefinitely. We know this is not conducive for your child or family but it's in the best interest to keep our students, staff, and community healthy. The Nebraska Department of Education suggested that we prepare for school closure and make arrangements for continuing education through online and remote learning. Our teachers have been busy planning the last few days and are ready to roll out academic instruction remotely starting Monday, March 23rd. Online and remote learning means that the learner and teacher are separated and therefore can’t meet in a traditional classroom setting.  Since school is closed, we will provide resources, lessons, and guidance to continue learning at home. These resources will be available by the individual teacher.

  • PreK-4 teachers will use Seesaw as their primary communication and learning tool with students and families.

  • 5-12 teachers will focus their communication and learning through Google Classroom.

We hope that parents can partner with children to complete these activities.  Some will include learning with devices and technology, while others do not; similar to the student experience during a typical school day. We recognize that these activities do not replace classroom instruction; however, we want to continue offering educational activities and lessons to our students. Although some of these resources are already regularly used in school, we hope that students have opportunities to try something new or show their learning in a new way.  All lessons will be created so students can hopefully complete the work independently, but know that teachers are here to help when needed. The teachers will have “office hours” so kids and parents can call, email, or do a ZOOM session to answer any questions you may have.

Online and remote learning activities are organized by grade level and contain a combination of low tech and technology-based options across all subject areas, including math, reading, writing, spelling, science, social studies, art, library, tech, PE, and music.  Our goal is to provide a structure for at-home learning so students have lessons and activities to continue learning new skills and prevent regression during a short or long term closure.

Again, we know this is not ideal for anyone but we will do our best to continue educating our kids.  If you have concerns or questions, please reach out to myself or your child's teacher. There will be a lot of information shared with you over the next few days so please read through things carefully.

Thanks ~ Mrs. Dolliver
